Trauma I

Trauma I
Tapestry: 595mm x 890mm
Wool yarn on cotton warp
Price: £3,950

Trauma I is a reimagining of Barnett Newman’s 1948 ‘Colour Field’ oil on canvas painting Onement I as a tapestry. Although Trauma I is slightly larger than Newman’s piece, it stays true to his minimalistic yet powerful visual structure.

Trauma I is woven on a linen warp at 4wpi and the weft comprises of 9 hand-dyed strands. It is 24 inches wide and 35 inches tall and is attached to a slab of oak with Velcro. The wood is hung from a green cord and attached with d rings. On the back of the tapestry is the date (26) in binary and makers mark in Morse code (GP).

The simplicity of form is intensified by the blending of the weft resulting in the centre of the tapestry being significantly lighter than the top and bottom yet the gradation in colour tricks the eye into initially thinking the colour is uniform.  The off-centre ‘zip’ is created with rya knotted hand-dyed yarn with the gradation in the colour in the opposite direction to the body of the tapestry.
