Born in Russia and living in Germany until he became a French citizen before the Second World War, Wassily Kandinsky is acknowledged as one of the prophets of abstract art. Kandinsky accredited his passion for abstraction to a devotion to inner beauty and a fervour of spirit. Study in Jade is looking to emulate features of Kandinsky’s later works: emotional harmony and abstraction.

Green is associated with nature, growth, and renewal and may evoke feelings of calm and tranquillity. To some, jade symbolises health, prosperity, and balance. To others it is envy, illness, greed, or jealousy.

Study in Jade measures 59cm x 117cm and is woven with nine strands of hand-dyed woollen yarn using Kentex Acid Dyes on 4 to the inch cotton warp. A gently meandering slash runs from top to bottom (or bottom to top) and is in opposing hues to the main weaving. The slash is also hand-dyed and is formed from Guernsey and Arran wool and created from a series of rya knots. The maker’s mark is woven into the rear hem and the piece hangs from a wooden batten.
